Frances,

I hear what you are saying and your sense of an idenity loss. I am part Native American and the sense of loss is known among my people.

Perhaps you could explain something to me. I have heard about the Bris milah and often wondered what is the meaning of the ceremony. Could you explain what the Bris Milah is and the significance of the ritual?

Frances, I understand your feelings. I am catholic and my husband is jewish. When we were dating we discussed religion at length. My desire was for my children to know God. I did not care if they were Jewish or Catholic. Just felt it was important for them to be SOMETHING! My husband, and I, decided to raise the children Catholic, but I often feel a sense of guilt that they are not Jewish because of the decline in the Jewish population. We celebrate all the religious holidays, and attend temple with my husband on the holy days. Is this enough? My children do not think of themselves as Jewish. I hope your daughter chooses a religion for the children..it is important for them to be something. We ultimately chose my religion because I was the mother and my husband felt the bloodline came from me. We are happy, my kids are well adjusted, but there is still that sense of guilt when people realize I am a goy and so are my kids! Good luck! God Bless!

My heart goes out to the author over her understandable sense of loss. But my feeling is that there will always, always be the Jewish people. That being said, here in early 21st century America, we seem to be inexorably interbreeding beyond identity. I speak from my own experience...I am Roman Catholic and descended from 7 European nations married to a French/Japanese Presbyterian. Our children look as if they are from nowhere and everywhere...the new Americans.
