Though I wasn't in Moscow, it was the first time I stayed up all night to read and finish a book. I was a student of Mr. McCourt's in 2002, in a memoir-writing workshop, and one bit of his advice to me, in particular, remains so true; "Don't write to be funny . . . just write."
