Busted Borders: Walter (Argentina)

Video 1 - "I got caught by ICE, and detained for twenty days"

Walter did not know he was undocumented until he was applying for college.

With the help of a grant from the Carnegie Corporation, BustedHalo.com began covering the issue of immigration in a unique way. Instead of contributing to the glut of coverage about immigration, BustedHalo is featuring stories by immigrants themselves about the issue. We distributed Flip video cameras to undocumented individuals and agencies across the country and asked them to start video blogging for a period of at least three months.

Busted Borders is an attempt to use the web’s unfiltered nature to move the immigration debate away from abstractions and statistics. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, we hope to give a personal glimpse into the humanity of these strangers in our midst. For reasons of safety, some of the participants have opted to keep their last names and locations secret.

Busted Borders is an ongoing project and we are still in its early stages. If you or someone you know is interested in participating please contact us at borders@bustedhalo.com.

I loved the dcoumentary. I am originally from Argentina, and Brett you want to know my status? I am a citizen whether you like it or not. Some people are just so hateful they forget their parents and granparents came from somewhere else (unless you are a Cherokee o Sioux, which I doubt) Bravo Walter, you are a talented young man and deserve to have a legal status. You’ll do more for this country than “hatriots” like Brett

Why isn’t he being deported? You can’t blame ICE for doing their job. Walter should blame his parents for being criminals and breaking our laws. Unfortunately, they were caught many years too late – where Walter grew up thinking that he was a citizen. Shame on Walter’s parents. You are not just criminals – but what you have done to your son is unthinkable. Had you obeyed our laws, this would have never happened. You knowingly and purposfully disrespected me, the United States, our people and our laws, and see what you have created. Walter, I am sorry – but you and your parents have to go and never come back.

This is the first time I viewed any videos for Busted Borders and ‘am touched by this personal story. I, too, wonder where is he now, what is going to happen to him? Can we follow these individuals through some kind of time frame? I’m horrified how he has to pay such a price! I’m sure his parents brought him here to have a better life.

I feel as if he didn’t complete his story. What is his status now? And why didn’t he ever need a birth certificate or Social Security number? Didn’t he ever work at a job before college??
