Do we really want Sarah Palin to be our replacement for John McCain if and when he dies while in office? The answer is NO! She wants Creationism taught in our public schools. The First Amendment to the Constitution says we have freedom of religion. To force other faiths to learn the Judeo-Christian origin of life is unacceptable. If we want our children to learn about Creation we should teach them that ourselves or send them to a school that teaches it. She preaches abstinence only in schools but look at her barely legal daughter. Obviously, abstinence worked for her. Palin has a newborn but has anyone wondered who is taking care of that child while Palin is on the campaign trail? She was mayor of Wasilla from 1996 until 2002 and then became Governor in 2006 in an, “anyone but this guy” race. It’s pathetic really. The bottom line is do we really want to risk having this narrow-minded woman as our President? I for one don’t.

I think every op-ed piece should be read with a grain of salt but I found this particular passage of Gloria Steinem’s article very telling.

“Palin’s value to those patriarchs is clear: She opposes just about every issue that women support by a majority or plurality. She believes that creationism should be taught in public schools but disbelieves global warming; she opposes gun control but supports government control of women’s wombs; she opposes stem cell research but approves “abstinence-only” programs, which increase unwanted births, sexually transmitted diseases and abortions; she tried to use taxpayers’ millions for a state program to shoot wolves from the air but didn’t spend enough money to fix a state school system with the lowest high-school graduation rate in the nation; she runs with a candidate who opposes the Fair Pay Act but supports $500 million in subsidies for a natural gas pipeline across Alaska; she supports drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, though even McCain has opted for the lesser evil of offshore drilling.”

Harold, maybe I should clarify what I mean by loose cannon. Hillary Clinton is a strong woman and she doesn’t pull any punches for sure (and has dedicated her life to government, politics and public policy) but there are no surprises. She’s just been around so long and is very much a mainstream democrat. People may spin what she says but we know where she stands on the issues. With Palin I feel like anything could happen. Its been surprise surprise surprise and she’s only been VP candidate for a few days, I have a strong suspicion that she’ll be getting more er… interesting as the next few weeks go by. One other area of concern for me-when I found out her daughter was pregnant my first thought was ‘what kind of mother throws her kid onto the international stage at what has to be the most difficult moment of her young life? What a crappy thing to do to your kid!’ (and I would say the same thing about a father who did it) like John Edwards running when he knew that the story of his affair could break any day and humiliate his family I think its the height of selfish narcissism to expose your family to public scandal that way.

Harold, if the main reason you are voting for McCain/Palin is because of her RNC speech than I for one am glad you are on that side of the fence. It takes more than empty rhetoric to gain my vote!

Nora, the loose cannon is not Palin, it’s Hillary Clinton! That women scares me more than anyone else in politics right now and I’m happy she is not the Dems nominee.

I like Palin after her speech and I will be proud to cast my vote for the McCain/Palin ticket… First time I’ll be proud to vote for a president since Reagan!

I think more than anything, her speech at the RNC was such a success for Republicans because she is young (relative to McCain) and aggressive. The speech itself wasn’t a revelation, just her rhetoric. Preaching to the choir is something wholly different than being engaged in a televised debate.

I don’t find Palin “a lose canon” at all. Nor do I think there will be a chorus of republican concern. If anything, her speech showed who she was and that revelation has actually energized the conservative base, who were’t too pleased with McCain as the nominee. People who complain that her resume is thin need only to look at the DNC’s pick for president and she clearly outshines him in terms of executive experience and revivals him as an orator. But, better still, she has actually accomplishments whereas Obama does not.

I loved the Ron Paul supporters comments! His skepticism is palpable and I found his interest in Palin heading the ticket fascinating, that idea frankly terrifies me. I think she’s a loose cannon and the chorus of republican concern over the Palin pick is bound to grow louder in the coming weeks.
