As a current JV in Cleveland, I agree with Fr. Rick's call to encourage folks to consider year-of-service programs. As a Dayton grad, I can also second Dan Richter in encouraging that the Marianist Volunteer Porgram is a good one - it was an MVP participant who inspired me to become a JV. Look at CNVS and consider all the options. You'll never look at life the same way again.

Hey Fr. Rick! I was at Chestnut Hill last year when you started saying masses. Kevin Kuczynski and I both joined the LaSallian Volunteer program and he is serving at the Leo Center in California and I am at San Juan Diego Middle School in Racine, Wisconsin. I want to encourage more people to volunteer and don't forget there are a lot of great volunteer programs out there, like the LaSallian Volunteers, that you can apply to. Check out lasallianvolunteers.org !

I was in JVC with the good senator and can only second his words of advice. JVC was transformational and has stayed with me over two decades later. While I have moved on in my life, JVC has always been a part of who I am. I cannot echo the message enough to be open to trying it. You will be changed forever!

As a volunteer program coordinator, I really appreciate this line of articles and the emphasis on discerning whether or not a year or two of volunteering is a match for a particular individual. I will pass these articles along to young people as graduation approaches.

This being stated, I would urge those who read this article and others to really consider all of their options. The Catholic Network of Volunteer Service - www.cnvs.org - provides a showcase of approximately 200 volunteer programs. They have a wonderful resource called the Response Directory. One simply inputs the volunteer criteria they have , clicks "enter" and the application responds with the programs that meet/fit those criteria. Both JVC and MercyCorps are member programs of CNVS, as is the Marianist Volunteer Program - www.marianist.com/mvp!

Best of luck in your search!
