Song of the Summer: “Biscuits”

Kacey-MusgravesDespite being a New Yorker — at least, 10 years in the city has convinced me that I am one — I love country music. One of my favorite artists is Kacey Musgraves, a 26-year-old Texan whose intelligence and wit shines in her songs. She isn’t afraid to speak her mind in an industry that can be controversial at times.

Musgraves releases her second album this month, and the first single, “Biscuits,” is light and breezy — perfect for summer. But at its core is a deeper message about doing things your way and living the life you want. The title comes from the chorus: “Mind your own biscuits and life will be gravy.”

Also, who wouldn’t love a video set at a square dance, complete with a barn, hay barrels, and bandana print? I just want to move in and set up camp.

As someone who struggles with trying not to compare myself to others, I really identify with this song (and one of Musgraves’ earlier hits, “Follow Your Arrow”). Hearing it snaps me out of my fog and puts me back on course. Granted, that’s a work in progress, but I feel like she is the type of artist who understands that nobody is perfect and that we’re all just doing our best.

I’m looking forward to Musgraves’ new album and seeing her on tour when she rolls through New York in July. I’ll be bopping my head and tapping my toe when “Biscuits” comes on.
