I remember reading at a Mass where a long-haired, teenage server was wearing an earing. When I said to the (very conservative) pastor that I was surprised he allowed such a thing, the monsignor said that not only was the kid responsible, conscientious and unfailingly polite but that he did an hour of adoration each week. Thus, I was gently, but firmly put in my place – and rightly so.

Regarding dress codes: the priest in my home parish does not permit “short pants” for either men or women. The “winter Texans” that vacation here during the winter months, though, tend to wear shorts to Mass. Then the priest in a neighboring parish doesn’t ban shorts at all. I do believe that if a person is serving as an altar server or Eucharistic minister should dress properly and appropriate for the Mass. Even teens should be expected to dress appropriately for a youth Mass.

Yes. It is just an earring.
