Having grown up with my feet on both sides of Vatican II, I like worshipping to all kinds of music. In the rush to produce contemporary music, however, there has been some very bad music that is in the hymnals. Music that even my kids would have rolled their eyes with a ‘oh no not that one again’ look. What is even more disturbing to me is the rapid increase of the seemingly need to applaud soloists and choirs after a hymn or after Mass. It is like a dousing with cold water, bringing me back down to earth from where the music took me. It ususally starts with a few clap happy people and then the herd mentality kicks in with more and more people claping because they think they are supposed to be clapping. It really takes the joy out of worshipping.

    Hi Father Dwyer,
Just happened to click on your link on Facebook and listened to some discussion of church music.
My wife and I became members of another Catholic Church http://www.saintkatharinedrexelparish.org sometime ago. The church and Pastor Rev. John F. Deary, OSA has become the most welcoming part in our life. The choir and church musicians cut a cd last year for a fund raiser. I was so overwhelmed by the music that the cds ended up as Christmas gifts to loved ones who were wowed by the music. If you would like to take a listen, I have copied 4 of the songs for dowloading at this site (not for sharing, just for a taste) http://www.floridamotel.com/SKD/ . If you like it, I’ll purchase a full copy and send it to you.

    God bless you.
