It is because Christian Baptism is foundational in the Trinity–Father, Son, and Holy Spirit–three persons in one God. The LDS Church does not believe this.

Scot, I think a big part is that Mormons and Catholics see “priesthood authority” differently. In the Catholic church, all people share in the priesthood of Christ. This is most evident in marriage…In the LDS church, only those with particular authority or “keys” can officiate a wedding because the authority lies with them as an appointed servant of God, but in the Catholic church the man and woman have the power to marry each other. The officiant (priest) is there as a representative of the Church and of Christ. Baptisms from Protestant denominations but does not accept those baptized in the Mormon church. I’m not exactly sure why, but I think it has less to do with priesthood authority than some other differences in belief. I don’t quite get the theological arguments enough to explain

Very interesting topic. I’m a mormon and can tell you that all mormon converts are baptized regardless of what faith they come from. I would think that the Catholic church would do the same, since our churches share a common claim of direct lineage of authority through Peter. The baptism only counts if done by proper priesthood authority, right? Enjoyed the podcast!
