In Normandy, during Advent children would run through the fields and orchards with torches and set fire to bundles of straw, to drive out vermin that would damage the crops.

    A suggestion for this date on next year’s Advent Calendar: introduce the “O” Antiphons. These are traditional prayers said during vespers (evening prayer) from December 17 to December 23. (“O Come, O Come, Emmanuel is sort of a take-off of these prayers.)
